Introduction to Bird Identification

This course will equip you with some fundamental skills for learning to identify birds, and ten baseline species to compare and contrast against, for both visual and vocal identification. These are common and widespread species within the UK, which should be accessible to most people to see out in the field. As you continue learning, these baseline species will act as a framework that new knowledge can be added to, accelerating your learning and bird recognition skills.

Course Content:

  • Course content including both video and written elements;
  • 10 baseline species, to create a diagnostic framework for learning birds;
  • Points of Comparison!’ suggestions for continued learning to compare similar species;
  • Audio of songs and calls selected to highlight the most important vocalisations of the species, and songs and calls to compare;
  • Field exercises to guide your learning away from the online course, to encourage spending time outside where the real learning happens!

Duration – the online course content will take several hours to complete, but there is an expectation and requirement to implement this learning out in the field which will be an on going part of learning.
